4 Causes of a Running Toilet
Every household will encounter a running toilet from time to time. While it may seem like a minor problem, a running toilet wastes water and costs you money. Fortunately, it’s often a simple problem to address. Here are four potential reasons for a running toilet.
Flapper Seal or Flush Valve
The flapper must seal properly after each flush to prevent water from leaking. Otherwise, your toilet will run. If your flapper seal is old, it may not fully seal and will need replacing.
Flapper Chain
The flapper chain is a common cause of a running toilet. It’s important that your flapper chain is the correct length for your toilet. If the chain is too short or too long, the flapper seal will not close properly and your toilet will run. Simply adjust the length of your flapper chain to correct this problem.
Float Ball
When you flush your toilet, the float ball sinks down and opens the inlet valve. The float ball rises when the tank refills with water, closing the inlet valve. If the float ball is damaged or misaligned, the valve may not completely close. Your float may also be too high. If the float is raised higher than the water in your tank can reach, your toilet will continue running.
Fill Valve
Your toilet’s fill valve may have a leak. To check this, flush your toilet. While the tank is refilling, stop the water by lifting the float arm. Your fill valve is leaking if the tank continues to fill and water flows into the overflow valve. You’ll need assistance from a plumber to fix a leaky fill valve.
